Odd that there's nothing up yet about this. It's got to be a good thing, on balance, but the risk of a power vacuum has to be high as well. I tend to rely on Jason Burke for analysis of Pakistan. Anyone else know any good sources?

I think you have to assume it's good news. But it's pretty bloody scary news, too. Musharraf may be the kind of general who heads a junta after a coup, but he's our military dictator and you never quite know what Pakistan's power structures are going to throw up in his place.

Apparently the new Chief of Staff of the Army is a Musharraf clone so expect no change

As one of the apparently million people in the UK with relatives back in Pakistan I am very interested, but I find some of the news coverage tends towards the hysterical 'my god, it's full of terrorists and they've got nuclear weapons' and I get annoyed.

Apparently Pervez's biggest problem is never having got round to salting a few billion in a London or Zurich bank.

This probably means we'll have to endure him on the geopolitical rubber-chicken lecture tour circuit. Still, if it keeps President Tone away from the gig that's good.

The cricketers are divided. Kevin Pietersen , as captain and spokesman doesn't want to go. Samit Patel (new fringe player) does.
