No, it's just they're showing a Brass Eye repeat at the moment, the one which in the adbreak announces that Noel Edmonds has shot the aforementioned entertainer. It's just as disconcerting as first time around, I thought, even when you know what's happening.

I always get Clive James mixed up with Clive Anderson. Even when I don't, I assume I have, and have to have a sit down and work it all throuh.

I'm the same with the letters J and G, and also with Malibu and Bacardi. I think it's a rare form of dyslexia known only to a few top Science Nerds.

He's giving a talk in Brighton soon as part of the comedy festival. I might go. I've got several volumes of his TV criticism from the mid-1970s and, even though he's often an insufferable snob, it's always readable stuff.

I agree, I read that stuff, too. Whatever his flaws, he's as eloquent and amusing as the best of them.

I've got them, too. I like the way he makes three channels of TV that usually starts at noon and finishes at midnight sound a thousand times better than 200 24-hour channels.

And I reckon Clive James on Television must be one of the most influential programmes on British TV ever. It's weird watching it today knowing that most of the stuff the studio audience pissed themselves looking at barely excite comment today.

These days I think he might be all snobby xenophobia (discernible in the excellent Observer columns) and no wit. Judging from a talk I saw him and PJ O'Rourke give soon after 9/11, anyway.

Indeed.

His many autobiographies are fun. He's very much an easy targets man- sixties student revolutionaries and all- but good fun.
