sometime in the 1990's in one of the many irish bars that sprung up in swansea , i came across an "irish" ale called hurleys . Does anybody have any information on this ale , because otherwise it was a dream , the 90's are a bit of a blur .But this was real (hopefully )

Welcome, our West Walian brethren.

The only thing I can find is that which is described under guest ales at this pub but it only appears to be sold at this pub

Is there anywhere I can get my hands on some Jever? It's a rather cheeky number from Northern Germany.

I long to be reunited with it's clean and crisp taste.

I bought a couple of bottles in London recently, though wales might be a different matter. I think you can get hold of just about anything you want via mailorder if its worth that much to you

My local supermarket's full of the stuff. That's not a help, really, is it?

The taste is famously described here as "friesisch-herb", i.e. Frisian and "herb", which kind of means "dry and bitter, but in a nice, hoppy way". Do any of our beer buffs know what the English word for "herb" is, if there is one? It's been bugging me for years.

Oh, and it costs about forty of your New English Pee for a half-litre bottle. I love this country.

"herb", which kind of means "dry and bitter, but in a nice, hoppy way".

It's a funny one, "herb". When I've heard it used to describe women, it's normally in the sense of, "mouthy and bitter, in a way that will lead to you getting a thick ear if you don't watch what you're saying." I've never heard it used to describe a man.

And I've no idea what the beer-related translation of "herb" would be. Probably due to the fact that I know virtually nothing about beer and only slightly more about translating.

There's also "herbe Niederlagen", which presumably means you need a beer or two to get over them.

What accounts for that fairy liquid taste that I regularly detect in pints of Hoergarden?

No Irish bars in Swansea now, I don't think, although I suppose that could change by tonight.

Oh, yes, that's a magnificent beer. They regularly do it at the beer stall at Borough Market, I do know, and it would also be worth giving Nelson Wines in Colliers Wood a ring, because they often have some good German numbers in.

At a guess, you have the "coriander tastes soapy" gene. Seriously.

Is that a gene? I never knew that. Well I never. And all these years people have been telling me I 'don't understand food'.

Well I'm buggered. I sowed some coriander in pots and yesterday, while thinning out the seedlings, I tasted some and they were exactly like soap. I thought there was something wrong with them.

Dried coriander doesn't taste like that. Does this mean I might just as well throw the whole lot away?
