I shared a house with someone from Sri Lanka for a few weeks about 4 years ago, he was a big fan of Mind Your Language

I think Mind your language was very popular amongst the ethnic minorities at the time.

Probably because they all knew someone "just off the boat" who would show behavior similar to the stereotype, propably in the same way Goodness Gracious me, Little miss Jecelyn et al are popular.

BTW when i lived in nigeria in 85-86 mind your lanuage was very popular and they even had a nigerian version called second chance with their own regional stereotypes.
This lady was one of the lead characters with her trademark Gele (headscarf).

What was the series that had Spike Milligan blacked up as an Indian, never repeated, that I always confuse with "Love Thy Neighbour" (which was the one where the white Man U fan Labour voter and the black Tory spent half an hour each week hilariously shouting "Nig-nog" and "Big White Chief" at one another)?

You're thinking of 'Curry and Chips' - although you are better off not doing so.

Milligan was actually Indian- he spent his childhood in Poona and then Rangoon before his family moved to England.

Comic actor Michael Bates (It ain't half hot mum)also grew up in India. He claimed this justified his role as Rangi Ram in the concert party comedy.

True, but he wasn't black.

I could be mistaken here but weren't "Love Thy Neighbour" and "Mind Your Language" written by the same person?
