So I was staying in this apartment block in Gran Canaria and the first day I was there, P and I were in the elevator when I noticed the name of the manufacturer.
I shit you not, it was "Schindler"

Their website is here... http://www.schindlerlifts.co.uk/ukc_index/ukc_pass_entry.htm

Any other inappropriate company names?

On the same theme but rather more disturbing is this Bavarian company-who I believe come from the same family as their famous namesake

you can even get a coffee cup or a souvenir jacket from the fanshop

"I don't get it."

Schindler's Lift = Schindler's List

Jasper Carrot did a skit about it about 15 years ago.

Pretty much every lift in the Benelux is a Schindler.

***

The Mengele owners are relatives of the famous concentration camp doctor. About 20 years ago in Austria there was a famous court case where an Auschwitz survivor took the company to court in an attempt to get them to switch off their neon sign that she could see from her bedroom window. She lost.

When my brother was a lecturer at an agricultural college in Cheshire, he got many visits from the local Mengele sales rep called John Vassall who had previously been sentenced to 35 years in prison for selling UK submarine secrets to the Soviets.

He went freelance later, and did very well.

I got the Schindler's lift, I just didn't see why it was inappropriate.

So what do you do then, do you just stand there hoping they'll stop on your floor by themselves?

Funnily enough I have to go to the Pathe Cinema offices everyday to deliver packages, and the lifts in that building are also made by Schindler.

A woman who works at Pathe Cinema was once in the lift as well, so I pointed to the name on the lift and remarked that we were in "Schindler's Lift". She didn't get it.

Sometimes I wonder how people end up in certain jobs.

On the elevators/lifts topic I was so disappointed to learn that, contrary to popular legend, Otis' UK head office is not in fact in Reading, so no, they did not answer the phone with "Otis Reading".

Oh, and inappropriate:

Powergen Italia (put them together)

(contrary to some reports, it is a real company, but not affiliated with the bigger Powergen company)

They're refurbishing the lifts in our office block at the moment (Otis, not Schindler, though there are plenty of those around too) and I've just been in the new one for the first time.

It's outrageous: it's got high-gloss gold-coloured wall panels with mirrors on three sides and on the ceiling. It's like being in Roman Abramovich's bathroom.

There's a soft-drinks company based near me called "Gyno drinks". This never fails to amuse me and put me in mind of Vegina (For life. not death).

There was a company called Nutter Engineering not far from me not so long ago. There must have been a gaggle of temps lining up to get jobs there so they could have the joy of answering phones with the line 'Hello, Nutter?'
