Cant say ive heard of this happening before. Is it compulsory to suspend referees who are linked with financial irregularities?

It's very strange.

He can't be the first ref to have accumulated debts in that amount. There has to be something else going on here.

Perhaps the PL fear that a referee with known personal debts is more likely to utilise his position in order to rectify the problem.

Mike Dean was taken off the 2006 FA Cup Final for being part of a racing syndicate, so any link to financial speculation and/or controversy appears to be enough for the PL to intervene.

I'm assuming he'll not be allowed to referee in the Football League, even after it's cleared up.

Kind of off-topic question: how often to referees work in their other professions? I'm always fascinated when you see that they're a dentist or an accountant, or whatever, but how much time to they devote to that other career?
