Why are they bleating about this now? They must know that the UEFA Cup is much devalued these days; besides which, the only time they did make into the CL, they were dumped out by Villareal in the qualifying round.

Well, quite. As always with Everton, the fact that they have a genuinely justified grievance just makes the whole thing funnier.

Everton would probably consider themselves a bit unlucky to get an eventual semi-finalist in the qualifiers of the 2006 champions league. I don't think any other english team has ever met a team in the qualifying round that was anywhere near as tough. certainly that shower of shit that liverpool had to play this season weren't up to much. Who was it? Toulouse?

Villarreal was the hardest draw Everton could possibly have got. Liverpool's last few qualifiers have been against the likes of CSKA Sofia, Maccabi Haifa, Grazer AK and the aforementioned Toulouse, whose star player was Johan Elmander.

I look forward to hearing what happens when Uefa's spokesman tries to convince the chief execs of Europe's top clubs that their disproportionate income is a bad thing for them in the long term, because it'll stop domestic leagues being competitive.
