In 1991, Kaiserslautern won the Bundesliga (despite Stefan Effenberg claiming that Bayern Munich would win the title because "all the other teams are too stupid") and duly went into the 91/92 Champions League qualifiers, as every team had to in those days regardless of seeding or their country of origin.
They struggled past a Bulgarian team in the first round, and then drew Barcelona in the second round with a place in the eight-team group stage at stake.
The first leg in the Nou Camp ended 2-0 to Barcelona. In the second leg, Kaiserslautern tore into Barca, and by early in the second half they had levelled the aggregate scores with two goals by the Bosnian striker Demir Hotic. Then, with a quarter of an hour left, Bjarne Goldbaek, later of Chelsea and Fulham, made it 3-0. Kaiserslautern were going through.
Barcelona looked fucked, but in the last minute of stoppage time, Ronald Koeman pumped a free-kick high towards the far corner of the penalty area, Jose Maria Bakero rose and headed it over the goalkeeper Gerry Ehrmann and in at the far post.
Having survived by a hair's breadth, Barcelona went on to go all the way that season and win the European Cup, and the 3-1 match is now known as "El Milagro di Kaiserslautern".
